Minnesota Donkey and Mule News

The MN Donkey and Mule Club had another successful weekend at the 2003 Minnesota Horse Expo. A big thanks to all the families who brought animals. What a terrific variety of quality animals we had!

The Charlie Schutz, Don Kevilus, Gary Wagenaar, Joylene Johnson and Terri Hurley families combined to bring 6 donkeys, 4 mules and one mare & mule foal to present.

Each day we had a 1-minute "Parade of Breeds" and 3-minute "Breed Demonstration" in the Coliseum. This year we were asked to also give an extra presentation each day to highlight our animals in an outdoor arena. We demonstrated driving, English and Western riding, Log Snigging and the Coon Jump and presented lots of mule and donkey information. Each 40-minute presentation was well attended with lots of interest. Many people stopped at the stalls to confirm the presentation time and location, they didn't want to miss it. What a great opportunity to share and promote our favorite animals on such a beautiful weekend! My mule, Rocky, and I also participated in a Sidesaddle Demo each day. Mules truly are versatile!

I'd like to extend a special 'Thank you' to Jan and Wayne Peterson and their grandkids for their invaluable help in preparing the display, decorating, assisting with the animals and staying till the very end. We would have been lost without them.
Also a big thanks to Carolyn Burnap and Kay Stanton for their announcing skills and Carolyn for sticking it out with us all weekend! Many hands definitely make the work lighter (and much more fun!). To the many other members who stopped by and willingly helped out.......thank you!

Terri Hurley
